Before you go
Questions every visitor asks, each answered in the guide with sources and dates.
Do I need a visa to travel to Venezuela?
Whether you need a visa for Venezuela depends on your passport and how you enter. US and Canadian tourists need a visa before travel. British citizens may visit by air for up to 90 days without one, and Spain, Colombia, Mexico and Argentina are on Venezuela’s air-entry exemption list. Check your case again before booking.
Is it safe to travel to Venezuela in 2026?
No government describes Venezuela as safe. As of 12 October 2026 the UK advises against all but essential travel to most of the country, Canada says avoid all travel, the US says reconsider travel, and Spain says take extreme precautions and avoid certain areas. Read the advisory for your passport before booking.
How do I get to Venezuela and to Isla Margarita?
Commercial flights to Venezuela are limited. International flights land at Maiquetía (Caracas), which resumed limited operations on 1 September 2026, and at Valencia, Barquisimeto, Barcelona and Maracaibo. Isla Margarita has its own airport at Porlamar, served from Panama by Copa, and a ferry from Puerto La Cruz. Confirm each route with the airline before booking.
How do I pay for things in Venezuela?
Venezuela’s currency is the bolívar, but US dollars are widely accepted and many businesses also take international cards, though some card machines reject them. Carry small dollar notes, exchange only at authorised institutions at the official rate, and do not rely on ATMs with a foreign card. Declare cash of US$10,000 or more on entry.
